Film/TV Company Profiles: New Line Cinema

Company History:
New Line Cinemas was founded in 1967 by a 27 year old Bob Shaye. He had the foresight and vision to see that college campuses were taking a liking to both foreign and cult films. His earliest success was with the re-distribution of the 30's propoganda cult classic Reefer Madness.

New Line was one of the few truly independent studios that not only produced and marketed their own original product, but also distributed as well.

New Line had a number of huge successes during their independent existence such as the Lord of the Rings trilogy, Wedding Crashers, Nightmare on Elm Street and many others.

Unfortunately, after a few bad bets New Line was forced to become a part of a larger studio, joining Warner Brothers in early 2008.

New Line had joined forces with HBO to create another smaller independent production company, PictureHouse. Unfortunately, it was announced in May of 2008 that they would be shutting down.

New Line was a genuine maverick in its day and hopes are strong that the label will once again regain prominence. For those independent studios that never achieved huge success (Orion, Savoy, Carolco, Cannon, etc.), New Line truly stood out among the crowd as the leader in what can be done in the independent world.

Major Players:
Robert Shaye - Or, Bob Shaye, was the founder and served as co-chairman and co-CEO until late summer 2008.

Michael Lynn - was co-chairman and co-CEO before the merger with Warner Brothers was finalized.

Affiliated Brands:
Picturehouse - in association with HBO Films (shuttered May, 2008)

New Line Television - Produced The Real Wedding Crashers for NBC in 2007.
