Originally founded in 1971, Viacom was a growing media entity that changed its name to the CBS Corporation in 1986. The Viacom of today is actually a 2006 spin-off from the CBS Corporation. The split was an attempt to separate the various media assets into two separate public companies. Although Sumner Redstone is still the Chairman of the board of Viacom, Philippe P. Dauman runs the day to day activities.
