Many of the books I've come across in this genre give you a sense of the overall film industry, but are so generalized that they seem vague, out of touch and ultimately, useless. However, CAREER OPPORTUNITIES IN THE FILM INDUSTRY was one book that stood out among the crowd for it's detailed career profiles. From gaffer to grip, over 75 different profiles are featured.

Why You Need This Book

There are a number of different types of opportunities to enter film industry, but only a handful of them might seem recognizable at first. Most people know the typical film job descriptions like writer, director, actor, etc. But there are so many other jobs that might be better suited to your particular talents and needs that you might otherwise never know about.

The career profiles in this book are extremely well laid out. They are informative and are extremely effective in laying out not only what the job is, but the type of education and skill set needed to go after it as well. Additionally, there are profiles of those who have already achieved the goal of getting the job, showing how they got there and what they're doing now.

The first part of any successful search is information and this book is loaded with that. You will quickly be able to discern which careers are best suited to your talent, skill sets and temperament. There's no "glamour" gigs here. The descriptions provided in the career profiles give you a clear glimpse into exactly what the life of a gaffer, make-up artist, writer and dozens upon dozens of other film careers consists of.

One other thing this book does extremely well is that it shows you that the film industry isn't necessarily limited to just Hollywood and New York. There is an absolute explosion of independant movies hitting the scene nowadays shot in places like Madison, Wisconsin or Odessa, Texas. All of these productions need qualified talent to work them and this book shows you whom to contact to put your name in the hat.

What's The Price of an Education?

This book isn't as cheap as some others on the subject; however, what's the price you pay for getting vague, out of date information? This is clearly the book to have on hand as you try to research the career in film that you wish to have.
